Dreamer’s Landscape: Artist Statement

The beach is more than a vacation spot, it is a mind set. In these paintings I try to capture the feeling of sand between your toes and the calming sound of the waves crashing on the shore.

Combining landscapes I see in my dreams and in my life with the texture of everyday objects, I find the inspiration for each piece. Taking an image and combining it with the elements of an old postcard or tattered vacation photograph, I am engaged to layer on paint, bringing textures out and into the scenes. Using brushes, rubber spatulas, fingers and sandpaper I work away at each piece until my vision is realized. Finally I finish them off with a wash or stain, adding age and depth.

Peaceful and restorative, like the ocean itself I try to bring on a calming effect with my work. These dreamer’s landscapes represent places deep inside my mind.

Waxing Gibbous Gambol

This was an illustration for a poetry book "Love Farrago: Waxing Gibbous Gambol" by Trevor Griles. Below is the title piece from the collection of unique writings about the phases of the moon. This is an older abstract painting from 1993 but I feel it shows my progression from my early years to now.

Love Farrago: Waxing Gibbous Gambol
Mere sliver of a friend, Iseek you out shortly after nightfall when you guise as a lowborn plebein in the western sky. I see you dropping low in the early eve and you feel my earthshine Love Farrago, though you snuggle there in new moon arms. Sideways growing smiling at twisted bulbous blooms blossoming vern vale. I catch a ray of your deep glimmer, slicing eventually dicing my passion, I Think, dually leaning your Way I jump from atop your immense Stretch, grasping a firm sapling and floating down upon untraversed ground, bending my knees, springing up and forward into unexplored prancing. Though my nature is nocturnal i sometimes venture into the ichorous shine, while caged in my treacherous excess. i eat of your flickering flame and bathe in its glory. By the time you shatter into rings around my Earthshine, the Sun will be as dead, inert, and cold as you, O albus One, yet your planetary heat breaks upon my being in extremely long subtle waves from your Sea of Serenity. One day Death, then I'll fly, soaring into the Void. A tear forever and a distant laugh from a big blue ball hanging in the heavens like a crippled creature in slow motion. Venus smiles upon the chosen thrills of the chosen people. One was me. I didn't know Lost sight of the crafty choices, slashed the Faith, forgot the worthy embrace of that which matters and makes the most of it. I continue to cry perfectly purposeful hopeful almost rainbow colorful blend, ejaculations, spouting variegated visions of dreams lavabo virago dazzle, brilliant spectral splendor blinding libido timidly seeking the guerdon gale. Maybe this time things will be different. Perhaps a Moment will turn into Eternity, completing the circle, the Thought. Once again, I see you, almost there, awaiting yet another Waxing Gibbous Gambol.
